I thought I would start posting some of the YouTube projects I've been working on here...I just finished this one yesterday, a mash-up of one of my favorite artists: 

I finished a site (for the most part) last week that I've been meaning to make now for quite a while. I've been interested in cataloging and documenting my musical experiences whilst in Scotland and wanted to create some kind of format that would allow others to easily see where in the country I recorded a particular snippet and some background information on the music, the location, and/or the musicians.

Though I'm a pretty minimalist drummer when it comes to my kit size, I've been expanding my set a bit ever since I started playing for the Tom Foolery Band. Over the past few months, I've acquired a late 50s WFL marching snare that I've converted to a floor tom and a 60s Slingerland rack tom. I painted both of them a dark blue to try to match the blue of the Ludwig duco finish on my snare and bass, but wasn't really satisfied...I started looking at wrap companies to see about getting a custom duco wrap, but, again, wasn't satisfied with that whole experience. So! I gave painting them a shot...it was pretty intimidating at first, but I think they came out quite decently. Thanks to TFB's saxophonist Frank for providing a ''lazy Susan'' rig! 

Also, I got a killer deal on a 1967 Rogers Holiday set from the guys over at Indie Music in Milford, NH. A little birthday present for myself! I think I'll make this one my gigging set.. Didn't really dig the black reso head on the bass, so a white one is on the way.

I've taken over the drum chair for the Tom Foolery Band and it's been goin' great! We've been keepin' pretty busy, playing a doubleheader country club and prom two weeks ago and then playing our monthly gig at Waxy's in Keene last weekend. I'm really impressed with how well my Rick Sticks are holding up and can't recommend them enough! 

So I've been planning this for quite some time but decided to take action last week. Had a little factory set up on my coffee table and put 50 of these together. Be on the look out southern NH!

For the past 3 or so months I've been working on building my own instrument. It'll be similar to a bouzouki but with four double courses of strings, like the mandolin. It'll also have a whole bevy of sympathetic strings running across the top. I'm also trying to only use hand tools for this project. Here're some pics so far:

Just wanted to share what I've been working on. I decided to get back into viola (well, sort of) after a 10 year or so break. I wanted to learn fiddle tunes on it and thought about getting some octave strings, but decided to convert it into a fiddle instead. Then my love for all things sympathetic took hold and...boom, took the fingerboard off, chiseled it and the neck out, drilled some holes in the bridge and in the tailpiece, made a wee nut, made some tuning pegs, drilled three holes in the pegbox for the new tuning pegs, and clamped it all back together. Viola to fiddle to hardanger-ish fiddle!

My girlfriend did the fantastic artwork on the top. I used three .09 guitar strings for the symps and have them tuned an octave above the low G, in unison with the D, and in unison with the A. They've really been helping me out with my intonation...the fiddle just sings when everything's in tune. 

I've also been building a bouzouki-ish type of instrument. I used a gourd for the body, spruce for the top, and will have a neck running through the body..I'll get some pics up shortly. Oh, and I plan to have at least 7 or so symps running across the top somehow! 

Lastly, I wanted to share that I've signed on with Rich Sticks! They're a custom drumstick company based here in NH. I took a tour of their shop after ordering a couple pairs of sticks and was so impressed with how friendly everyone was and how open they were to discussing every aspect of making sticks. And not just sticks! They also make quite a number of other products, like the Drum Taco, which I'm a huge fan of. The Taco clips on magnetically to a drum's tension rods/lugs and dampens the resonance a bit. It can be easily flipped on and off the drumhead and comes in three different sizes..I've been using it on my floor tom and am finally pleased with how it sounds.

It's pretty amazing how little it costs to get completely custom drumsticks made through them...and they feel great! Definitely on par (and even better in my opinion) with everything else out there!
